4+1 PROGRAMS
Two Degrees at Once
The 4+1 programs allow students to complete two degrees with up to an additional 29 credit hours, for a total credit load of up to 155 hours upon graduation.
Students can complete one of two 4+1 programs in education. The B.S. in Biology/Masters of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program will lead to a dual degree and a secondary licensure in Biology. The B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies: Elementary Education K-5 / Masters of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Special Education program will lead to dual degree and dual licensure in elementary education and special education.
Each degree will be obtained simultaneously following the completion of coursework as outlined at the bottom of each major’s page. Undergraduate coursework will be completed on campus at FHU during the traditional 16-week semester. Graduate coursework is primarily completed online in an 8-week format.
Admission to a 4+1 program in education
- The major/program to be declared by the time the student has earned 45 credit hours,
- Admittance to the Teacher Ed Program
- Complete EDU130 Introduction to Education with a grade of C or higher
- Have completed 28 semester hours with a GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Complete the Teacher Education Program Application
- Have a Passing Test Score (choose one of the following)
- ACT (21 or higher)
- Praxis Core
- SAT (1100 or higher)
- Complete a TBI Background Check
- Recommendations from three Faculty Members
- Begin your Professional Portfolio
- Philosophy of Education Paper
- Field Experience Reflection Paper

As students enter the graduate program, they must meet the following transition point requirements and have at least a GPA of 3.0.
